Dr Mahendra Naidoo

Dr Mahendra Naidoo is a Medical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of gastrointestinal, colorectal and gynaecological cancers.

Dr Naidoo graduated from the University of Otago in 2007 and undertook physician training at Westmead Hospital (Sydney) and North Shore Hospital. He completed his specialty training in Medical Oncology at Waikato Hospital, followed by a two-year fellowship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, focusing on the treatment of patients with gynaecological and gastrointestinal cancers. During this time, he also worked in the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Management Clinic, counselling women with confirmed genetic alterations (e.g. BRCA1/BRCA2) on risk reduction.

Dr Naidoo is a Fulbright Scholar and completed a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in 2015. He subsequently worked at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Maryland, USA, contributing to the design and review of cancer research grants. From 2021 to 2024, Dr Naidoo worked at Monash Health and Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, with a focus on gastrointestinal and gynaecological cancers, including clinical trials. He has recently returned to New Zealand and works at Auckland City Hospital as well as Canopy Cancer Care (Epsom and Ormiston clinics).

Dr Naidoo brings strong clinical and research leadership to his role. He is the Lead of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Team at Auckland City Hospital, and a Principal Investigator in the Liver Research Unit, specialising in advanced treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). He is a Principal Investigator in novel cancer therapies at New Zealand Clinical Research.  He also maintains an adjunct honorary research position at Monash University's cancer research program as well as honorary SMO position at Monash Health. This enables him to be connected to new promising research and treatment within this and other extensive Australasian and worldwide research networks related to clinical trials

Dr Naidoo completed his PhD at Monash University in 2026, focusing on improving outcomes in ovarian cancer through the National Gynae-Oncology Registry (NGOR) under Professor John Zalcberg.

In addition, Mahendra is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Oncology, School of Medical Sciences at the University of Auckland.

Dr Naidoo communicates closely with his patients and their families about the different models of care available, working together to develop a treatment plan that best supports their individual needs and preferences.
